{"id":14579,"date":"2018-03-14T16:30:41","date_gmt":"2018-03-14T16:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/?p=14579"},"modified":"2025-06-23T15:36:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T15:36:05","slug":"nutty-digestion-plus-a-paleo-granola-recipe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/nutty-digestion-plus-a-paleo-granola-recipe","title":{"rendered":"nutty digestion (plus a paleo granola recipe!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let\u2019s talk nuts.<br \/>\nThen we\u2019ll get right to the good stuff\u2026granola!<br \/>\nBut we have to start with nuts.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s because this week\u2019s granola recipe (the 3rd in our granola recipe round-up) is from our <a href=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FxNA Nutritionist<\/a>, Sandra Brougher. Sandra provided some purely delicious paleo perfection for us in a nutty concoction that fits all the paleo parameters.<br \/>\nWhen it comes to paleo, nuts can be a paramount part of the protocol.<br \/>\nAnd yet, nuts don\u2019t work for all of us.<br \/>\nYou may love them. (I do!)<br \/>\nYou may hate them.<br \/>\nYour body may thrive with them. (That\u2019s me!)<br \/>\nOr your gut may say no-way nuts.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s break this down (in more ways than one)\u2026<br \/>\nNuts are an extremely nutrient-dense food.<br \/>\nThey provide us with good fats, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, minerals and fiber. The key minerals that nuts contain include magnesium, zinc, selenium and copper\u2014all of which are often deficient in our modern-day diets. And some of the fats they harbor, special fats called \u2018sterols\u2019, can help balance cholesterol levels and reduce cancer risk.<br \/>\nNuts also have other health-promoting and disease-fighting properties that source from certain phytochemicals including flavonoids, luteolin, tocotrienols and others.<br \/>\n<em>Plus,<\/em> let\u2019s face it, nuts are an easy and nutritious snack!<br \/>\nAll that said, a food can be golden on paper and yet agitate our guts. That\u2019s where bio-individuality comes into play, and where we are not what we eat, but what our bodies can do with what we eat! This is something we pay heed to in our <a href=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Counseling Services<\/a>, never assuming that there is a one-size-fits-all diet.<br \/>\nNuts fall into this category for sure.<br \/>\nAnd here\u2019s why\u2026<br \/>\nThere are a few chemical compounds in nuts that can make them a challenge on an already compromised digestive system. Those chemicals include lectins, phytic acid and tannins.<br \/>\nBut I don\u2019t want to take this opportunity to scare you away from the nut jar.<br \/>\nNot at all.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re already good with nuts, proceed right to Sandra\u2019s Paleo Chock-Full-O-Nuts Granola recipe. We\u2019d love to keep the granola inspiration going!<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Paleo_granola-2-1024x994.jpg\" alt=\"Paleo Chock-Full-O-Nuts Granola \" width=\"239\" height=\"232\" class=\"alignright wp-image-14580\">Paleo Chock-Full-O-Nuts Granola<\/h2>\n<p>This recipe is inspired by Danielle Walker&#8217;s recipe in her much-loved cookbook <em><br \/>\nAgainst All Grain.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/2 cup unsweetened coconut flakes<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup chopped cashews<\/li>\n<li>1 cup chopped pecans<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup sunflower seeds<\/li>\n<li>10 chopped brazil nuts<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 cup dried wild blueberries<\/li>\n<li>1\/4 cup melted raw honey, coconut nectar or yacon syrup (or reduce amount if you prefer it less sweet)<\/li>\n<li>2 Tbspn melted coconut oil<\/li>\n<li>2 tspn vanilla extract<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong><br \/>\nPlace all nuts in a bowl, cover with water and soak overnight or 8 hours. Discard water when done. (This step is optional but recommended!)<br \/>\nPlace all nuts and coconut flakes in a food processor to chop or chop by hand. Be careful you don&#8217;t chop too fine or you will end up with powder instead of nuts. Add the dried blueberries to your bowl (after you\u2019ve chopped the nuts).<br \/>\nIn a separate bowl, blend honey, coconut oil, and vanilla. Pour over chopped nuts and mix well until the nuts and fruit are well-coated.<br \/>\nCover a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread out nut mixture. Bake in oven at 175 degrees for 12 hours, stirring mixture with a spoon every few hours. Alternatively, you can use a dehydrator to \u2018bake\u2019 your granola if you prefer that to having the oven on all day.<br \/>\nRemove from the oven. The mixture will be somewhat moist and sticky. Transfer to a glass bowl or pan and allow to sit and dry. Store in a glass container.<br \/>\nEnjoy with coconut milk or on its own as a snack.<\/p>\n<h3>Why sprout your nuts?<\/h3>\n<p>Sprouting allows you to appreciate the maximum nutrient potential of the nuts and seeds you are eating. To put it simply, raw nuts and seeds contain both enzymes and enzyme inhibitors. Roasting nuts and seeds kills both the enzymes and the inhibitors. Thankfully, sprouting nuts and seeds kills the enzyme inhibitors and actually activates the enzymes that help us to digest these gems.<br \/>\nWhen you sprout, you get the most from every nut and seed you eat!<br \/>\n<em>Note: Nuts sprout on the inside, so most of the time you won\u2019t see a tail form in the sprouting methods discussed here.<\/em><br \/>\nDifferent nuts and seeds have different soaking\/sprouting times. See below for a simple guide.<br \/>\n<strong>large seeds<\/strong><br \/>\nThese seeds should be removed from their shells before soaking. Soak for 4\u20138 hours, drain, and use immediately, or continue to rinse and drain for up to 3 days to develop a tail.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>pumpkin seeds<\/li>\n<li>sesame seeds<\/li>\n<li>sunflower seeds<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>long-soak nuts<\/strong><br \/>\nThese nuts contain enzyme-inhibiting compounds in their skins that are eliminated or reduced during soaking. Soak for 6\u201312 hours and eat as-is, use in recipes (butters, milks, etc.), or dehydrate for crispy snacking nuts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>almonds<\/li>\n<li>hazelnuts (filberts)<\/li>\n<li>pistachios<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>medium-soak nuts<\/strong><br \/>\nSoak for 2\u20136 hours and eat as-is, use in recipes (butters, milks, etc.), or dehydrate for crispy snacking nuts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brazil nuts<\/li>\n<li>pecans<\/li>\n<li>walnuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>short-soak nuts<\/strong><br \/>\nSoak for 1\u20132 hours and eat as-is, use in recipes (butters, milks, etc.), or dehydrate for crispy snacking nuts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cashews<\/li>\n<li>macadamia nuts<\/li>\n<li>pine nuts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to paleo, nuts can be a paramount part of the protocol.<br \/>\nAnd yet, nuts don\u2019t work for all of us.<br \/>\nYou may love them.
