I\u2019ve been sipping into the caffeine lately. (Especially on noted occasions like today\u2014Mother\u2019s Day, as well as what would have been my late husband\u2019s 50th birthday\u2014where it feels like I <em>deserve<\/em> a \u201ctreat\u201d.)<br \/>\nEarlier this week I even <u><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BipSUoIBf5J\/?taken-by=andreanakayama\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted a photograph on Instagram<\/a><\/strong><\/u> of the walnut-almond milk coffee latte I had with a friend at a local cafe.<br \/>\n<em>OK. There. I said it!<\/em><br \/>\nWhile my body can\u2019t tolerate <em>too<\/em> much coffee, I can fall <em>deeply<\/em> for the green tea. And the chocolate. (Oooooh, the chocolate!) These past couple of weeks I\u2019ll admit that I\u2019ve been mixing the two, for a decadent matcha green tea, coconut milk mocha. It\u2019s my matcha mocha.<br \/>\n(Sometimes I even add a little maca, because it\u2019s not only fun to say, but delicious to drink.)<br \/>\nAnd my matcha maca mocha has been just about everything I\u2019ve needed to fuel me through days filled with deadlines, seasonal weather fluctuations, big life changes, and travel during the past month or so.<br \/>\nYes, my decadent drink is delicious but don\u2019t get any big ideas. I\u2019m making this public confession because I\u2019ve been thinking about the effects of caffeine\u2026the effects on my <u>liver.<\/u><br \/>\nYou may be caffeine sensitive (a \u201cslow detoxifier\u201d), experiencing a head rush and heart palpitations at the thought of an Americano or too much dark chocolate mousse. Or you may be one of those rare individuals (like my sister!), who can enjoy a post-dinner espresso and slumber like a baby an hour later.<br \/>\nThe difference lies in our livers.<br \/>\nAnd right now, the books stacked beside my bed are all about the liver.<br \/>\nThis is in preparation to support <em>you<\/em> during the <u><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/cleanses\/spring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FxNA Spring Cleanse<\/a><\/strong><\/u> that begins on May 14th (that\u2019s this Monday!)<br \/>\nI\u2019m getting ready for rejuvenation (mine and I hope yours, too!)<br \/>\nAnd spring rejuvenation and detoxification are <em>all<\/em> about the liver.<br \/>\nDetoxification is the opportunity to amplify the body\u2019s ability to break down and eliminate waste. That waste can be drugs, alcohol, nicotine, prescription medication, toxins in our food or air, and especially the excessive radiation we are now exposed to.<br \/>\nOh, and did I forget to mention caffeine?<br \/>\n<em>Sigh.<\/em><br \/>\nCaffeine is a substance that requires the liver for processing.<br \/>\nLet\u2019s take a look\u2026<br \/>\nAbout 30 to 60 minutes after consumption, caffeine has reached the height of its potential. Yet it takes another few hours (at least, and this depends on your individual system) for the liver to deconstruct the caffeine.<br \/>\nThe liver has a big and important job!<br \/>\nThere are several pathways in which different substances are broken down and then made possible for excretion. That\u2019s IF your liver is working optimally.<br \/>\nCaffeine is distracting your liver from the work it needs to do elsewhere.<br \/>\nIn addition, all detoxification is highly dependent on hydration. Besides confounding the liver with breakdown, the caffeine is acting as a diuretic, serving to dehydrate us despite our best efforts to consume more water.<br \/>\nDistracting, dehydrating yet delicious?!<br \/>\nPerhaps not the best recipe for optimal health.<br \/>\nIn looking at the impact of my matcha maca mocha on my own liver, I\u2019m not saying that all caffeine is all bad all the time. Both green tea and raw chocolate have some amazing health benefits that are undeniable! Even coffee can be rich in antioxidants!<br \/>\nWhat I am realizing, however, is that it\u2019s important to alleviate the stress on my powerful gatekeeper\u2014at least on occasion\u2014and bolster its efficiency.<br \/>\nSpring is the <u>perfect<\/u> time of year to give our livers this extra loving break.<br \/>\nToday was my first day sans caffeine. I\u2019m turning the special occasion of Mother\u2019s Day into a special occasion to take extra special care of myself.<br \/>\nNo matcha maca mocha for me. I\u2019m getting outdoors instead.<br \/>\nAnd so far so good.<br \/>\nIf you\u2019re already planning on joining me for the <strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/cleanses\/spring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spring Cleanse<\/a><\/u><\/strong>, start decreasing (or eliminating) your caffeine now.
