{"id":18254,"date":"2021-09-15T14:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-15T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/functionalnutritionlab.com\/blog\/?p=294"},"modified":"2025-08-28T14:14:40","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T14:14:40","slug":"epigenetics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/epigenetics","title":{"rendered":"Epigenetics: The Impact of Environment on Gene Expression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Listen to this post instead!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/696375883&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=true&amp;show_comments=false&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s talk epigenetics.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genes and environment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epi- is a prefix taken from Greek that means \u201cupon, at, by, near, over, on top of, toward, against, among.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epigenetics are the factors that bathe our genes and prompt them to express <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negatively<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positively,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> turning them \u201con\u201d or \u201coff\u201d, up or down<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This expression contributes to all known dysfunctions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all got genes. We know that. And by now many of us also know that the genes we have don\u2019t dictate our health or lack thereof. Most of us are familiar with the saying \u201cgenes load the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while this common metaphor makes the relationship between the genome and epigenome clear, I recognize that it\u2019s also not one that many of us in the health and healing professions feel comfortable using. That\u2019s why I prefer the analogy of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the butterfly effect<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the Butterfly Effect of Epigenetics?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">butterfly effect<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states that there is a sensitive interdependence on conditions in which a small change in one system can result in large differences in other systems. We can think of the epigenome (or the environment) as the system that results in changes in the genome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words\u2026 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all things matter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything is connected.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are all unique.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All things matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of epigenetics on health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, epigenetics <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that environment. And the environment is how we influence the genetic and cellular expressions that manifest as signs, symptoms and disease states. We shift the environment by modifying factors like diet, lifestyle, outlook, and biological function (or how the body performs its many jobs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These habit changes that each and every patient can make\u2014especially with the help of a knowledgeable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/articles\/functional-nutrition-counselor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional Nutrition Counselor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014result in clinical remedies. And yet, over time, these identical twins shift and change so that their physical expression often becomes distinct. In other words, we can more easily tell one from the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s the genes that provide the instructions for the development of the body, it\u2019s the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epigenome<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that interacts with the DNA to provide what might be considered a second set of instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This second set of instructions works to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn on<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turn off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> particular genes by tagging them, thereby influencing the expression, but not the genetic code itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twins start out with not just the same genes, but the same imprinted epigenome (the tags that come with us at birth, that are handed down from our parents\u2014something otherwise known as \u201cantecedents\u201d in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/articles\/functional-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Yet from the moment and experience of birth, and onward as aging occurs, the environment of the twins will begin to differ\u2014different relationships, different food choices, different sleep patterns, different exposures to viruses, etc. These differences will influence their epigenome\u2014or environment\u2014and therefore their genetic expression and physical manifestation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epigenetic factors that influence genetic expression<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a quick list of factors that you can consider that impact genetic expression:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutrient status<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic exposures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stressors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community\/support<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relaxation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindset<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and more<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you find yourself lost, trying to be a genetic genie, remember that you likely have more of an opportunity to influence genetic expression by backing up and considering the epigenome.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learn More about Epigenetics and Become a Functional Nutrition Counselor!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the complex issues that your clients face is not as simple as looking on the surface.
