{"id":18273,"date":"2019-12-03T09:41:14","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T04:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/functionalnutritionlab.com\/blog\/?p=281"},"modified":"2023-09-11T17:16:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T17:16:14","slug":"terrain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/terrain","title":{"rendered":"The Crucial Role of Terrain in Functional Medicine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to this post instead!<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/722316652&amp;color=%23ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=true&amp;show_comments=false&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&amp;show_teaser=true\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first tenet of Function Medicine and Nutrition \u2013 of any <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/holisticnutritionlab.com\/blog\/whats-functional-and-whats-not\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">functional practice \u2013 <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is to address the root cause or, as I like to say, the \u2018root causes\u2019 (as most conditions are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/articles\/multifactorial\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multifactorial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that as clinicians we\u2019re not chasing symptoms. We\u2019re not playing \u201cwhack a mole.\u201d And we\u2019re not getting prescriptive based on a diagnosis alone. Instead we\u2019re looking to unearth the underlying issues (again, there are often many) that are causing the symptoms to arise and the diagnosis to manifest. You likely know this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also likely know that finding root causes isn\u2019t a straightforward equation:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammation isn\u2019t always caused by egg consumption (but can be).<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Butter in morning coffee won\u2019t always lead to weight loss (but does for some).<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating gluten won\u2019t always reduce mental health concerns (but can be an important step for some).<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how are we supposed to know where to look for the roots of an issue? Great question! We can find our answer in an analogy with botanical roots\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An analogy for root causes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a year, when my son was younger, he and I would travel to Hawaii to see family, get a bit of R&amp;R, and connect with some roots (he\u2019s actually part Hawaiian). Last time I was there, I met a man who was trying to grow tomatoes in his yard. His garden plot had plenty of sun, and he watered it daily, yet the plants just would not produce tomatoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went to a local nursery to find answers, and here\u2019s what the garden expert said:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHere in Hawaii, the soil is often deficient in calcium. That means your plants will grow, but you won\u2019t get any fruit. Add some oyster shells to the soil, and you\u2019ll get your tomatoes!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That seems logical\u2026 alter the soil and you\u2019ll alter the results. Well, the same is true with our bodies. To get to the root causes of our clients\u2019 issues, we need to address what those roots are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">growing in<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the biological soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terrain<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all know what the word \u201cterrain\u201d means. A \u201cterrain\u201d refers to a landscape, and all its features. When we consider a <\/span><b>biological terrain,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we\u2019re taking into account what I call \u201cthe environment within\u201d\u2014the landscape in which a sign, symptom or diagnosis was granted permission to express itself. Think about it\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The roots that we look for in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/articles\/root-cause-resolution-for-the-holistic-practitioner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">root-cause resolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exist in an environmental or biological terrain. Just as the roots of a tree grow in soil, the roots of a health issue grow in an environment that is conducive to that particular problem. When we alter the soil, we alter the roots. In this way we can bring lasting relief by changing the environment (ie. diet and lifestyle.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at this primary concept of Functional Medicine very briefly through a historical lens.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germ Theory vs. Biological Terrain Theory<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 1800s the French chemist, Louis Pasteur, developed what we now know as the \u201cGerm Theory of Disease.\u201d This theory posits that microbes from an external source can invade the body and are the primary cause of infectious disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this theory that, in many ways, is responsible for the birth of vaccinations, antibiotics and pasteurization. And while I cannot agree with the standard overuse or excessive application of these innovations, we cannot deny that there have been some important evolutions in modern medicine due to the Germ Theory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the following century we meet Raymond Rife, an American inventor. Rife opposed the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monomorphism<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (single form) approach of the Germ Theory in favor of a pleomorphic (many formed) concept. This is the basis of the Biological Terrain Theory.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applying the Biological Terrain Theory in Functional Medicine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Biological Terrain theory we can see that early forms of pathogenic bacteria, viruses and fungi are only given the \u201cadvantage\u201d to grow and proliferate within a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain environment.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Pasteur and Rife had somewhat opposing theories, looking through the lens of their work, we can begin to see the validity of both assumptions. I like to call this a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/holisticnutritionlab.com\/blog\/true-but-partial\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cyes, and\u2026\u201d approach.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, when it comes to working within <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scope of practice as a Functional Medicine Nutritionist, dedicated to dietary and lifestyle modifications for the eradication of diseases, it\u2019s <\/span><b>a focus on the terrain that wins over target practice, every single time.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even when the client case is complex or unknown, we can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">always<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work on terrain. And by doing so, we can shift the course of disease progression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you work in the field of Functional Medicine or Nutrition (or aim to) like I do, then you are uniquely suited to nurture the soil within which those roots grow. In fact, if you go for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/articles\/root-cause-resolution-for-the-holistic-practitioner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">root-cause resolution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without addressing the terrain, you\u2019re missing the point.
