But were they also chatting about the children? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> children!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back in the day, early in my nutrition career, when my son was much (much) younger, I got a sneak peak behind-the-scenes of several classrooms. Teachers used to contact me regularly to come speak to the parents of their classes and I\u2019d gain insights into the struggles with managing kids throughout the school day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These teachers asked me to address topics such as the importance of breakfast, healthy lunch options and how to navigate severe allergies in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what I also heard was where these wise teachers thought a nutritional upgrade could benefit the kids they spend time with every day. And you know what? Those teachers were right! Here\u2019s what they were seeing, and what many of us have been seeing and will continue to see as our kids school from home&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yawning by 10am<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of focus<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skin irritations and outbreaks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dark circles under the eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic runny noses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spacing out during math<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sassy attitudes in response to directives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disruptive behaviors that take time away from classwork<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and more<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Holy moly. Is this what so many of us are in store for as the classroom moves to the living room?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of us want to hear or see any of these things in our kids, right?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Truth be told, we especially don\u2019t want to learn that anybody\u2014teacher, grandparent, auntie or neighbor\u2014thinks that there\u2019s anything <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as parents, could be doing to help or support our child that we\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already doing. Heck, it\u2019s our job to give them the best-of-the-best and we pride ourselves on our abilities to do so!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling judged about our parenting is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worst<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Especially right now, when we\u2019re all a little stir crazy and overwhelmed with the added pressures of parenting during so much disruption and change.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First of all, kudos to the teachers that were paying attention and reached out for some added insight into the potential for food to make a difference in our kids\u2019 daily form and function. If those teachers did happen to dish it in the lounge, it\u2019s because they <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">care<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We should all be so lucky to have our children (back) in classrooms with faculty that show their concern for our child\u2019s welfare both inside and outside the school environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I know you care too. I know how hard it is to care about food and want to make good choices for your family and to navigate just how to get there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big question we can be asking ourselves as we head back into the school season is:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can we cultivate a true habitat for educational digestion and absorption?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I may have just given you the answer: learning is in part due to digestion and absorption. And that brings us right back to the food our kids eat and how their bodies process the key nutrients that help their bodies and brains prepare for learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The time is ripe to address some of these issues. In fact, with many of our kids schooling from home, it might just be the perfect time to do a simple nutrition upgrade!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>3 keys to using \u2018food as medicine\u2019 for your kiddos (and yourself!)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><b>The #1 meal to boost your child&#8217;s mental acuity and emotional balance\u2026<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakfast!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if your kids wake up and say they don\u2019t feel hungry, don\u2019t think their bodies and brains aren\u2019t starving. It\u2019s called break fast for a reason. The last time your kids ate may have been 8 to 12 hours before their morning meal!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That \u201cfast\u201d is necessary for proper digestion and to give the body a rest from processing. Yet breaking that fast is equally as important. The drop in blood sugar that occurs with the fast leads to mood swings, exhaustion, and cravings and consumption of sweeter foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To avoid these pitfalls, make sure their morning meal (and yours!) has fat, fiber, and protein. This powerful trio will supply steady energy for the brain and body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The #1 food category to feed your child&#8217;s developing bones and brain&#8230;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one can be controversial. The answer is fat. Yes, fat!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brain is 60% fat\u2014it\u2019s the fattest part of your body. And in order to function well, it needs to be fed&#8230;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fat!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brain actually uses dietary fat for cell membrane integrity, cell permeability, and building the brain at a structural level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brain is key to your child\u2019s ability to perform well on their exams, to understand and process the world around them, to relate to other individuals, and to feel content and at peace, happy and balanced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our brain is critical to sleep, to eat, to function! The brain is a vulnerable organ affected instantaneously by nutritional deficits and imbalances. It needs <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good fats <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to perform at its best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The GOOD fats include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coconut oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">organic butter from grass-fed cows (if no dairy intolerances)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ghee (clarified butter)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olive oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unrefined sesame oil<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lard, if you eat it<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flax oil (not for cooking)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hempseed oil (not for cooking)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nuts and seeds (if no intolerances)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fats from good quality eggs, beef, and full-fat dairy\u2014if those animal proteins are in your diet and work for the bodies you are feeding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remember from Key #1 to have some of these good fats for breakfast!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The #1 substance that inflames bad moods, bowel challenges, asthma, allergies, eczema and all those behavioral struggles we\u2019ve been mentioning&#8230;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The culprit is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sugar!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar aids in these unwanted outcomes:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mineral depletion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system repression (whoa, not right now please!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar and insulin imbalances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain function (including its inhibitory effects on serotonin production)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and of course, the teeth!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sugar has a dis-regulating effect on myriad areas of the body. Reducing sugar intake could very well be the key to your child\u2019s equanimity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all have a sweet tooth to some degree. And there are ways to enjoy something sweet without putting too much stress on your body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by reading labels for ingredients, and making simple treats with some of the healthier sugar options. Below are 2 lists\u2014the sugars to avoid, and the ones to INCLUDE!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sugars to avoid<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beet sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brown sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cane juice crystals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">confectioner\u2019s sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corn sweetener<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corn syrup<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evaporated cane juice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fruit juice concentrate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">granulated sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high fructose corn syrup<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">invert sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">powdered sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raw sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sugar cane<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turbinado sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Sugars you can safely INCLUDE:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raw honey (ideally local)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grade B organic maple syrup<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coconut or palm sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brown rice syrup<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stevia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clear raw agave, on occasion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fruit and dried fruits (dates make a great sweetener!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These sweeteners get my stamp of approval for kids for different reasons. Some are just plain whole foods and therefore have some great minerals and nutrients (dates, honey, and maple syrup); some are lower glycemic (like coconut sugar, brown rice syrup, raw agave and stevia). Using them will allow you to satisfy your child\u2019s sweet tooth without compromising their health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might even want to invite your kid to help make the new batch of sweets, or help plan a hearty breakfast. They\u2019re more likely to partake if they\u2019ve participated in the making.
