Over the years it\u2019s just become a part of your independent right to both celebrate and suffer.<br \/>\nToday, as we lean into the Labor Day weekend here in the states, I\u2019m sharing my top 4 tactics for loving the Labor Day levity (and letting it love you)\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>First<\/h2>\n<p>Make or <strong>bring a dish to your holiday festivities<\/strong> that will both captivate your culinary cravings (as well as quenching the appetites of those around you), while also soothing the potential for digestive distress.<br \/>\nMy trick when attending parties is always to bring <strong>both a sweet and a savory dish<\/strong>. That way none of my hankerings are neglected and I\u2019m not tempted to eat too far off my self-designated self-care path.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For your sweet treat, try this <a href=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/coconut-2\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gluten Free and Dairy Free \u2018Whipped Cream\u2019 Tart<\/a><\/li>\n<li>For your savory, the <strong>Carrot Fennel Slaw<\/strong> below is a <em>must<\/em>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Second<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re going to drink alcohol during your bash, take these pointers to heart:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you drink your spirits on an empty stomach, about 20% gets absorbed right through the walls of the stomach <em>(not even making it to your small intestine, where absorption takes place for most of what we consume)<\/em>, and reaches your blood and your brain within minutes. This causes not just a spike in blood sugar but a decreased sense of perception. My directive: <strong>Eat before you drink<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The hotter your body, the drunker you\u2019ll feel. Booze impairs your ability to control your body temperature. If it\u2019s hot where you are, <strong>go slowly and be sure to tune-in to your body\u2019s wisdom!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Aim to <strong>alternate<\/strong> your distilled drink of choice with a non-alcoholic beverage to slow your pace and aim to stick with just one libation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your blood, your brain, your body, your belly and your slumber will thank you!<\/p>\n<h2>Third<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been adopting a new way of eating that feels good to you, know that <strong>you don\u2019t have to jump ship just to please others<\/strong>. This is <em>your<\/em> temple we\u2019re talking about!<br \/>\nIn the words of our <a href=\"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/counseling\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">FxNA nutritionist<\/a> Megan Liebmann:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cOne way I like to look at opting into social situations, even with a more custom (I like to use the word custom rather than limited), way of eating, is through the lens of exercising a new social muscle. Just like training for a marathon, it can take some time to get those muscles good and strong. For me, looking at it this way shifts my mindset from the \u201cI can\u2019t have this\u201d, to \u201cI get to work on flexing my new muscle!\u201d.<\/em><br \/>\nI\u2019d say those flexed muscles look pretty sexy in a late summer sundress or surf shorts. Don\u2019t underestimate their appeal. At the same time, if the peach cobbler is calling, and the call won\u2019t quit, have some, savor each bite, and see how you feel.<br \/>\n(Alternatively, make a peach cobbler that fits your dietary needs and requirements! That\u2019s what I do!)<\/p>\n<h2>Fourth<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Have fun and don\u2019t complicate things!<\/strong> This is a time for celebration.<br \/>\nDigestion is a complex chemical and physiological process. It can get easily confused. And for some of us that complexity will result in digestive distress when we complicate the feeding court.<br \/>\nEating foods that we don\u2019t usually consume, ingesting a wide variety of foods that require different digestive enzymes and processes, as well as overeating can all inspire tummy tumult.<br \/>\nKnowing this is half the battle. Enter with the power of perspective and you\u2019re bound to <strong>enjoy not just Labor day but the day after as well<\/strong>.<br \/>\nTo a Labor Day filled with celebration of all the hard work you do every day, and in honor of the challenges that bring us here today!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FxNA-blog-header-purple-carrots-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-19778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FxNA-blog-header-purple-carrots-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FxNA-blog-header-purple-carrots-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FxNA-blog-header-purple-carrots-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FxNA-blog-header-purple-carrots-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/FxNA-blog-header-purple-carrots.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>fennel carrot slaw<\/h2>\n<p><em style=\"font-size: inherit;\">This is a great recipe to feed a crowd and support your digestive flow. Fennel is used medicinally to nurse indigestion, gas and digestive spasms. The recipe is easy to prepare, and can be served as-is or with added fresh herbs, radishes, or other seasonal shredded vegetables. Try sprinkling some sunflower seeds on top for added protein and crunch.<\/em><strong>ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 large fennel bulbs or 4 medium-sized bulbs, sliced thin with a mandolin slicer<\/li>\n<li>2 medium-sized carrots, shredded<\/li>\n<li>3 Tbsp olive oil<\/li>\n<li>3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar<\/li>\n<li>1 clove garlic, minced<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp honey or other liquid sweetener<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc tsp sea salt<\/li>\n<li>Optional: sunflower seeds (raw, sprouted and dehydrated, or toasted)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>preparation<\/strong><br \/>\nIn a large bowl, combine fennel and carrots and toss well to combine. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together oil, vinegar, garlic, honey, and sea salt. Add the dressing to the fennel and carrot mixture and massage the slaw with your hands. Top with a handful of sunflower seeds, if desired.
