This is especially true because several types of cancer, as well as low thyroid function, PCOS, and a host of other signs and symptoms, have one big thing in common that deserves our attention\u2026 estrogen dominance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prevalence of estrogen dominance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 80% of breast and chest cancers are estrogen receptor positive. What this means for both self-care and client or patient care, is that one of our best cancer prevention techniques is addressing estrogen dominance. This comes with an understanding that estrogen dominance can impact individuals of all ages and diverse gender identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Estrogen dominance doesn\u2019t just result in the formation of cancer, it has also led to a significant increase in reproductive disturbances including infertility. It\u2019s a modern-day epidemic influenced by both environmental factors and our body\u2019s ability to break down, process, and eliminate the excess estrogen we\u2019re exposed to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything excess in your body functions much like a toxin. This is referred to as an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endogenous toxin<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a surplus occurring within the body due to compromised digestion or inefficient metabolism. Estrogen has reached this toxic level in many of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider these facts and figures related to widespread hormonal imbalances:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the age of puberty has dropped to as low as 10 years of age<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endometriosis plagues approximately 10% of all peri-menopausal women<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMS symptoms are increasing, afflicting a minimum of 30% of all menstruating individuals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterine fibroids affect close to 25% of women and those with uteruses between the ages of 35 to 50<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately 10% of people are diagnosed with breast cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the symptoms of menopause are getting tougher to navigate as the root causes of those manifestations are getting overlooked<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific data now supports the fact that hormone disruption is at the roots of all these seemingly separate but related conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseed and estrogen levels<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people have questions about flaxseed being a phytoestrogen, meaning a plant estrogen. Does it increase the levels of estrogen in our body? Likely not. In fact, it helps detoxify the more harmful forms of estrogen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Lise Alschuler, author of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Definitive Guide To Cancer: An Integrative Approach to Prevention, Treatment, and Healing,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> studies on flax lignans demonstrate safety and efficacy in their use against breast cancer, \u201cinhibiting the growth of human estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells in mice and strengthening the tumor-inhibitory effect of tamoxifen\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that myth out of the way, I do promote the use of 1 to 2 tablespoons of fresh ground flax per day. This flexes just the right amount of flax muscle!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The powerful little seed: flaxseed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal balance may not come in a snack bar, but I\u2019ve got a tip that will most certainly help you on your way. Flaxseeds are a nice source of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids and can be a great addition to your diet. Learn more about why I love flax below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseeds: a rich source of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nutrients<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseeds are rich in alpha linolenic acid (ALA). This is an omega-3 fat that is a precursor to the form of omega-3 found in fish oils called eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseed oil provides a higher concentration of the ALA than the seeds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole flaxseeds provide a host of other nutrients that are lost in the oil, including manganese, magnesium, and especially fiber!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health benefits of consuming flax include:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-inflammation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone protection and health<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support for cancer prevention (particularly estrogen dominant cancers)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduction in formation of blood clots leading to heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased insulin response, beneficial for diabetics and all those with blood sugar imbalances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood-pressure regulation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cholesterol management<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hot flash reduction<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to buy and store flaxseed<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole flaxseeds:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseeds can be purchased whole, pre-ground, or as an oil. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole flaxseeds, stored in the freezer and ground weekly is my favorite way to incorporate flax into my everyday routine.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole flax seeds will last longer than pre-ground flax.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If buying in bulk, be sure the store has a good turn-over rate and the seeds are not sitting too long to ensure freshness.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole flax should be stored in an airtight glass container in your refrigerator or freezer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grind small amounts of whole flaxseeds in a coffee-type grinder and store in a separate airtight container in your refrigerator or freezer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ground flaxseeds:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ground flaxseeds are more prone to oxidation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purchase in vacuum-sealed or refrigerated bags and store in an airtight glass container in your freezer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseed oil:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseed oil is especially perishable and should be purchased in opaque bottles that have been kept refrigerated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxseed oil should have a sweet nutty flavor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never use flaxseed oil in cooking; add it to foods after they have been heated.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easy ways to boost flax intake for hormonal harmony:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sprinkle ground flax on hot or cold cereal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add ground flax to smoothies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add flaxseed oil to smoothies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use flaxseed oil in place of other oils for salad dressings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dip your bread into flaxseed oil instead of olive oil.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add ground flaxseeds to your homemade energy bars <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hello Flaxie Maxie Bar recipe below!<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sprinkle ground flax between the halves of an almond butter and jelly sandwich.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My son\u2019s favorite breakfast: Gluten-free bagel with flaxseed oil, avocado, tomato, smoked salmon, capers and some good-quality sea salt.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaxie Maxie Bars<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This low-glycemic version of my original Flax Max Bars was created by one of my clients who\u2019d been experimenting with snacks to maintain blood sugar for better hormone balance. Thanks El!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ingredients<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1\u00bd cups almonds (soaked and toasted in the oven is ideal)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bd cup walnuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bd cup cacao butter, coconut oil, or a mixture of the two<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bd cup crunchy almond butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bd cup goji berries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bc cup shredded coconut<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00bc cup fresh ground flax<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a little vanilla extract<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a couple pinches of salt<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handful of cacao nibs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 drops liquid stevia (add the stevia, mix and taste to bring it to your liking)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Preparation<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulse the nuts, flaxseeds, coconut, nut butter and salt in a food processor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently melt the coconut oil or cacao butter by placing the glass jar into warm water to soften enough to scoop or pour and measure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add coconut oil or cacao butter (or desired combination) to the food processor along with remaining ingredients.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pulse to create a coarse and pasty mixture.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Press mixture into an 8 x 8 glass baking dish.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chill in refrigerator for 1 hour, until mixture hardens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cut into bars and store in refrigerator.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note from the chef: \u201cI have used cashews, sunflower seeds, and sunflower seed butter.
