{"id":9867,"date":"0218-08-09T13:30:57","date_gmt":"0218-08-09T13:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fxnutrition.com\/?p=9867"},"modified":"2025-06-23T19:20:55","modified_gmt":"2025-06-23T19:20:55","slug":"notebooks-lunches-snacks-and-sacks-get-prepping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fxnutrition.com\/blog\/notebooks-lunches-snacks-and-sacks-get-prepping","title":{"rendered":"notebooks, lunches, snacks and sacks (get prepping!)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No matter how old you are, whether you have kids or not, this time of year holds a back-to-school air that\u2019s undeniable.<br \/>\nCan you feel it too?<br \/>\n<strong>Today I\u2019ve got some tips to help your transition that I don\u2019t want you to miss!<\/strong><br \/>\nMy boy, Gilbert, still has a few more weeks before he loads up his backpack and heads off to the first day of his senior year of high school, yet my mind is already on his long days away and lunch sacks to pack (which he now does on his own). Many of our clients in the Functional Nutrition Alliance Clinic have already heard the first-day-of-school bell ring!<br \/>\nIt can be hard when the lazy days of summer give way to the mad rush of getting everyone out the door on time with a nourishing breakfast in their belly and a healthy lunch in tow. I get it!<br \/>\nAnd then there\u2019s the end-of-day challenge of having dinner on the table when your crew convenes for the family meal.<br \/>\nThough easier said than done, I definitely like to think ahead, lay some ground rules and consider my daily habits\u2026<br \/>\nTaking time to cultivate the \u2018core basics\u2019 (good food, ample sleep, movement, and stress management, just to name a few), for each person in our families helps us with a smooth start to the school year. These customs and routines provide a bit more ease through the entire school year.<br \/>\nThinking of fueling our kids also calls to mind a favorite quote of mine\u2026<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThe number one medicine for my patients? FOOD! If I could find something better, I\u2019d use it.\u201d<\/strong><em>~Functional medicine pioneer Mark Hyman, MD<\/em><br \/>\nSadly we\u2019re not a culture that\u2019s tapping into this pharmacy\u2014for ameliorating the stress of school\u2019s demands or for fighting the colds and flus that strike this time of year.<br \/>\nAs parents (and caretakers of our own bodies) we\u2019ve become complacent, indulgent and (let\u2019s face it), too busy to turn our attention to true healing on a meal-by-meal basis.<br \/>\nThe current societal swing brings a lot of pressure and we as parents are concerned that our child will be \u201cdifferent\u201d among their peers if we use what we know about food choices to think of their lunchbox as a portable pharmacy for ample energy, focus and resilience.<br \/>\nAs a result, we may very well be overlooking the fact that we\u2019re the ones, right here, right now, that have a strong hand in informing the health, longevity and disease prevention for our kids.<br \/>\nFeel empowered that you get to make the choice at least three times a day to say \u2018yes\u2019 to vibrant health for you and your family.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make time for a breakfast that really is for champions!<\/li>\n<li>Pack those loving lunches!<\/li>\n<li>Get a delicious dinner on the table that everyone will eat!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I know, I know that\u2019s the tricky part (<em>especially the \u201ceveryone will eat\u201d part of the equation<\/em>) but I aim to help with that today.<br \/>\nI often joke that I\u2019m rough and tumble in the kitchen, rarely follow a recipe and often come up with concoctions that certainly aren\u2019t blog-worthy, <em>(you likely won\u2019t see me sharing photos on Instagram of my morning plantain toast and tea or my often brown-in-color smoothie\u2026)<\/em><br \/>\nBut I do have a few key tips that keep my kitchen well-stocked with ready-to-go-meals so I always have an answer when my not-so-little kid asks, \u201chey, what\u2019s for dinner?\u201d<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fxna\/misc\/pdf\/FxNA-10-tips-for-quick-food-prep.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u><strong>GRAB MY 10 TIPS FOR QUICK FOOD PREP!<\/strong><\/u><\/a><br \/>\nPrint it and bring it to the dinner table tonight so you can consider what might work for you and your family.<br \/>\nMaybe your kids will be more keen on eating their quinoa if they play a part in cooking it!<br \/>\nAnd don\u2019t be fooled into thinking that you just have to employ these tactics when (and if) the kids are around\u2026 I recommend you tack it up no matter. Your food pharmacy doesn\u2019t need to be a forgotten fantasy even if you\u2019re a household of one!<\/p>\n<h3>Here\u2019s your homework for the week (it is back to school time after all\u2026)<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>Grab your copy of my <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com\/fxna\/misc\/pdf\/FxNA-10-tips-for-quick-food-prep.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top 10 Tips for Quick Food Prep<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Give one or two of these tips a go this week on a day when you have time.
